After Friday afternoon’s avalanche drama in the Tyrolean Ötztal, new details have become known on Saturday morning: the fatal victim is a 32-year-old Chinese. The freerider had been torn down 100 meters by the snow masses. According to the police, the winter sports enthusiast wanted to make videos outside with two colleagues.
The accident in the so-called Königstal between Obergurgl and Hochgurgl happened in the early afternoon. Around 1.30 pm, the three tourists – two Chinese and a German aged 22, 32 and 39 – left the mountain station of the Wurmkogelbahn towards Königstal. “Immediately above the so-called Königsbach, the men wanted to make videos of jumping over an edge of the terrain into a hollow,” the researchers said.
Triggered by falling snow plate
Then it happened! After the 32-year-old Chinese jumped over the edge of the terrain first, he lost control of his skis and fell. “In doing so, it caused a layer of snow about 150 meters wide, from which it was swept away to the bottom of the Königstal about 100 meters and completely buried,” the researchers continue.
The 22-year-old companion who recorded the video was also dragged a few meters by the snow masses. However, he managed to get out of the avalanche on his own. “While the videographer immediately followed him and began searching and probing with the avalanche beacon, the second companion made the distress call.”
Hopeless: CPR aborted
When the alerted rescuers arrived, the companions had already located the buried person and were digging him up. After the recovery, the 32-year-old Chinese was taken to the base of the emergency medical helicopter while attempts were made to resuscitate him. Due to the lack of hope, CPR had to be stopped there and the man died.
