Devastating accident on Thursday in the Tyrolean Zillertal: A German (60) lost control of the wheel in Mayrhofen and collided with full force against a bridge railing. The car was completely demolished – the seriously injured wife had to be freed from the wreckage by the emergency services. The driver himself was also injured.
The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. The 60-year-old German was driving out of the valley on the B169 Zillertalstraße with his wife when he suddenly lost control at Mayrhofen, went off the road and crashed into the bridge railing and a concrete base.
Car ended up in oncoming vehicle
“Due to the force of the collision, the vehicle ended up on the oncoming roadway. The car was badly damaged and the front passenger had to be cut out of the wreckage by the fire brigade with rescue scissors,” the police said.
Zillertal road closed
After first aid at the scene of the accident, the seriously injured woman was flown by ambulance helicopter to the clinic in Innsbruck. Her husband was taken by ambulance to the Schwaz district hospital. In addition to rescue, emergency doctor and police, the volunteer fire brigade of Mayrhofen was present with 16 members. Zillertalstraße was closed until shortly after 7 p.m. in the vicinity of the accident.
