At the age of 91, a Viennese must appear before the jury on Friday. Out of desperation, the old lady wanted to end her life in July 2022 and take her husband, whom she took care of alone at home. But only her husband, to whom she had been married for 67 years, died in the fire. “An act of love,” said her lawyer.
“I can see very well, but I don’t hear well,” the defendant said at the beginning of the trial. The petite, friendly lady was born on September 18, 1931 in Vienna. She is 91 years old. On Friday she had to answer for murder at the Vienna regional court. The judge had her bring a chair and placed it directly in front of the right table.
At the age of 23 she married her beloved husband Franz and lived with him in an apartment in Simmering for more than 60 years. In 2016, her husband was diagnosed with dementia and required nursing care. “The situation has deteriorated. The suspect was overwhelmed by the situation,” the prosecutor explains.
Problems with property management and being overwhelmed
There was also a dispute with the property manager. “They really drove me to despair,” she felt she had to be pissed off for the apartment to be released.
It was her husband’s birthday on July 21, 2022. On that fateful day, Mrs. S. could no longer move her hand, according to her lawyer. It was the moment when she decided to end her life. “I wanted to commit suicide and spare him further suffering,” the defendant said in no uncertain terms.
Husband chokes in his sleep
The retired seamstress and domestic help waited for her husband to fall asleep. She doused clothes, paper and stuffed animals with surgical spirit and set fire to several places in the apartment. Her husband locks the bedroom, he should suffocate in his sleep. She herself planned to stay in the fire: “I heard it doesn’t take long to burn. I wanted to die quickly and 100 percent.”
By opening the door to the balcony in the burning apartment and going outside, she survived. The fire was too strong, she dared not go back. Her 93-year-old husband died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the burning house. In the AKH, the rescued known all, is now by far the oldest prisoner in custody.
„If I thought I would survive, I would have put my teeth in and put on my coat,” she told the judge. In the meantime, she was rescued from the balcony in pajamas and slippers.
