A study by Spain’s Engineering Observatory estimates that more than 200,000 engineers will be needed over the next decade, mainly in the industrial sector. The occupancy rate is around 98%.
Based on the data collected in this sectoral study, there are currently about 750,000 engineers in Spain, 20% of whom are women. 40% of engineers in Spain are 35 years old or younger.
The report confirms that there is a salary gap between male and female engineers of about 10% and although it is “significantly lower” than the total active population in Spain, at 24%, it is a figure that, according to the Observatory, we must be “so as soon as possible”.
The University of Deusto hosted this Friday in Bilbao the presentation of the conclusions of the first report on the current situation of engineering professionals, prepared by the Spanish Engineering Observatory.
After the presentation, a roundtable was opened in which all speakers agreed to point out the importance of engineering in the future of the economy and consider that professionals with a strong basic education who have “a lot of flexibility” and can adapt to a changing world.
The experts have chosen to promote “good projects that are exciting and have a purpose” to attract the talent of the youngest to prevent them from “migrating physically or telematically”.
