“Every life is worth a lot!” says someone who has just experienced how close life and death are. Markus Gruber was with Gerald Schmidberger in the earthquake zone in Turkey, where they searched for survivors of the natural disaster with their sniffer dogs “Boom” and “Action”.
They saw a lot of suffering, a lot of deaths, but the most impressive were the positive experiences: “With every contact and every rescue of life, cheers erupted immediately. People were so incredibly grateful that we were here. I will take that with me for the rest of my life,” says Markus Gruber, manager at Pöttinger Landmaschinen, after his return. And that too was characterized by a lot of gratitude and great emotions.
Turkish migrants said thank you
In addition to the comrades of the FF Traun, the Red Cross and representatives of politics, many people of Turkish origin came to the Traun fire station on Friday afternoon to thank the rescue workers for their work. Tears flowed, presents were given. After all, the rescuers from Traun, together with other helpers from Austria, managed to rescue nine people from the rubble.
The families of the two rescue workers have also had a hard time over the past ten days. “The call came at 3 am. The next day I had to tell our daughter why her father is gone now,” says Karin, Gerald Schmidberger’s wife.
Stressful time for those at home
“The next 48 hours were the hardest because we didn’t get any sign of life and didn’t know what was going on,” she says. A stressful time for her and her daughter Ines (7). And “by the way” she also had to run her husband’s business because he was saving lives.
