Because he wanted to take a picture of his wife with his mobile phone, a 68-year-old from the district of Gmunden fell into the icy Traunsee on Saturday around 2.20 pm. He had to be rescued by the water lifeboat.
The two had walked on the Miesweg, which was marked as a via ferrata. Immediately after boarding, the man turned to take his wife’s photo and stepped off the secured path. The unsecured area then gave way and the man fell.
Ten meters of free fall
He fell about ten meters in an almost free fall and ended up in the three degrees cold Traunsee. By climbing onto a plateau, he was able to free himself from the water on his own. Other hikers alerted the rescuers. The water rescue service brought the man back ashore with a lifeboat. He was taken to Gmunden Hospital with unknown injuries.
