Supply collapses – South Africans are without electricity for 11.5 hours a day

Date:

South Africa has been struggling with problems in its electricity networks for more than a decade. Large-scale failures occur again and again. According to the state energy supplier Eskom, residents must now be without power for 11.5 hours a day!

Eight power generation blocks in various coal-fired power stations have been out of order since Sunday, Eskom announced on Tuesday. This led to a further reduction in generation capacity. . The country of 60 million is coal-rich and, despite climate change, still relies on its aging and poorly maintained coal-fired power stations for nearly 80 percent of its power generation, which are increasingly failing.

Post of Minister of Electricity vacant
In early February, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a disaster due to the electricity crisis to free up additional financial resources in the budget to solve the problems. Ramaphosa also announced the appointment of an Electricity Minister to help resolve the crisis. However, the newly created position is still vacant.

In November, South Africa signed €600 million loan agreements with France and Germany to support South Africa’s energy transition. At the same time, EU countries have also been buying more coal from South Africa because of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.
