The head of the Stockholm police region and deputy chief of the Swedish national police, Mats Löfving, was found dead at home on Wednesday evening. Investigators are working to clear up the background. Since December 2022, Löfving has been under preliminary investigation for gross misconduct while on duty.
The previous investigations were related to a private relationship that the police chief allegedly had with a colleague. The investigation was, among other things, about whether Löfving should have made the woman head of department in 2015. In addition, it must be clarified, for example, whether he was guilty of a disciplinary offense when he awarded her a service weapon in 2020.
The preliminary results of the investigations were announced on Wednesday before Löfving’s death. The responsible detective had, among other things, advised the Swedish police chief to consider separating from Löfving or at least to dismiss him from his main position. After the death of the Stockholm police chief, the investigation was stopped and now his death must be investigated.
