When a pilot project is so successful it crashes: Although hydrogen trains were revered as the golden calf of public transport two and a half years ago, nothing has happened since the successful field test. Incidentally, the Green Ministry of Climate appears to be the biggest stumbling block for the energy transition.
As if public transport wasn’t inherently eco-friendly enough already, people all over the world are looking for more ecological forms of propulsion, especially rail. In 2020, the ÖBB in Lower Austria seemed to be ready for the next step towards a climate-neutral future and tested the use of hydrogen-powered trains on the “topographically demanding” Südbahn section for the first time.
They are considered a promising alternative to diesel locomotives on non-electrified tracks. And unfortunately there are more than enough of them in the Niederösterreich region. Both the federal railways and the state praised themselves for this successful political project, but what has become of it?
