Mercenaries advance – Bachmut: Wagner group reports capture of suburb

Date:

According to its own statements, the Russian mercenary group Wagner has seized a suburb of the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which has been the subject of fierce fighting for months. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin announced on Saturday that his fighters had taken “complete control” of the village of Yahidne.

In the Telegram online service, the troops published a photo of masked men holding a Wagner flag in front of the village sign about two kilometers from the center of Bakhmut.

Wagner group: Ukrainians blew up the dam
According to the Russian news agency Tass, the Wagner Group press office accused Ukrainian troops of blowing up a dam at Bakhmut to slow down the advance of Russian fighters.

Russia has been trying for months to bring Bakhmut under its control. The fighting for the industrial city has exposed tensions between the Russian army and the mercenary group Wagner, which the Kremlin denies.

The head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, assumed that Bakhmut would be captured as early as mid-February in “March or April”.

The Battle of Bakhmut is the longest-running battle of the years-long Russian offensive. According to analysts, the city is of little strategic importance – any proceeds would therefore have mainly symbolic value for Moscow.
