Excitement is in the air at shoots on this chilly Monday morning. About 3000 inhabitants live in the industrial town of Upper Styria, which is best known for its service area along the highway. Serious pensioners peer through the window of the bank opposite the police station. A red and white barrier tape surrounds the building complex, next to police cars and camera teams.
Shortly before 08:00, the post commander died here. He was only 59 years old. Two bullets from his 46-year-old colleague’s service weapon, a Glock 17, hit the officer in the head and abdomen.
“Some police officers are regular customers with us,” says a cigar shop whose store is only a few meters from the inspection. On the glass door is the announcement of the next bargain, workers and pensioners buy cigarettes and play the lottery.
“There is a rumor, yes, the rumor mill is bubbling,” says the cigar shop. “But we didn’t notice anything, just that a lot of police cars drove by.”
Number one topic of conversation in town
There is also a lot of talking in a coffee house at the entrance of the city. A group of retirees read aloud an online article. “The 59-year-old succumbed to his injuries at the crime scene… – well, there you can see what is being said again!” says one woman.
On Monday, however, most Triebeners pass the police check with a respectful distance and wide eyes. There is disbelief at the death of the 59-year-old police officer, who leaves behind three daughters and a partner. Lassing, the birthplace of the deceased, is also in a “shock state”, as mayor Engelbert Schaunitzer puts it.
Mayor Helmut Schöttl was deeply moved when the “crown” reached him: “They were my colleagues,” said the local chief, who himself works for the police. “I don’t want to say more about it…”
