The Finnish parliament on Tuesday began a multi-day debate on a law that should pave the way for NATO membership. As reported, the Finnish and Swedish governments applied for membership in the military alliance in May 2022. Two signatures of NATO countries are still missing.
Neither Turkey nor Hungary have yet ratified the agreement. While the Turkish government has long been blocking, arguing that Sweden is not doing enough to counter terrorist organizations, there are no Hungarian objections. It was only said that the parliament in Budapest wanted to start a debate on Wednesday and that a vote would take place in the coming week. For Sweden and Finland to join NATO, all 30 existing members must agree. 28 of them have already done so.
Finland going it alone?
Due to the attitude of the Turkish government, it is currently being discussed whether Finland can initially be admitted to NATO on its own. However, both countries have repeatedly emphasized that they want to join the alliance together and at the same time.
In 2008, the alliance promised Ukraine and Georgia accession. According to reports, the Russian government was taken into account at the time and the promise was deliberately kept vague. Today it is said to be “a long-term perspective” for the Ukrainian government. Joining NATO would cross a red line for the Kremlin. Russian President Vladimir Putin justifies his war by saying this should not happen, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
Long procedures
If the military alliance had taken Georgia and Ukraine at the time, Russian troops would not have invaded both countries, critics of Merkel believe. Poland and the Baltic states speak of a serious mistake, countries such as the Czech Republic have been demanding faster accession procedures since the autumn.
