Peru: Man (26) carried mummy around in cooler bag

Date:

In Peru, police seized an ancient mummified human from a former food supplier. Authorities say the mummy is between 600 and 800 years old and was found in a cooler bag that the man had used to deliver groceries.

Julio César Bermejo, 26, remains in custody while investigators investigate the case, a government official told AFP on Tuesday. Bermejo told local media that the mummy he called “Juanita” was “like my spiritual friend.”

“At home she is in my room, she sleeps with me. I’ll take care of her,” the 26-year-old said in a video widely shared online (see above). His father brought them home 30 years ago and has kept them with him ever since.

Police: ‘Not a Juanita, but a Juan’
According to the Ministry of Culture, the pre-Hispanic remains of a “mummified adult male” are said to be from the eastern part of Puno, a region in the Peruvian Andes about 1,300 kilometers southeast of the capital Lima. The person wrapped in bandages was “not a Juanita, but a Juan” who was at least 45 years old, a ministry expert said.

Mummy discovered by Patrol in Park
Police found the mummy’s remains in Bermejo’s bag on Saturday while patrolling a park in the city of Puno, where the suspect was staying with friends. He denied wanting to sell the mummy. He carried them with him because “my friends wanted to see them”. The Ministry of Culture said it confiscated the mummified remains “to protect and preserve this heritage”.

Andean country Peru is rich in archaeological sites and objects. The South American country’s most visited tourist destination is the famous 15th-century Inca ruin city of Machu Picchu near Cusco.
