German climate protection activists have defaced a monument not far from the Bundestag in Berlin. As the Last Generation group announced on Saturday, several of their supporters had “soaked in oil” the glass sculpture “Basic Law 49” in front of the Jakob Kaiser house.
A spokesman for the Berlin police said the monument had been defaced or doused. Which is not yet clear.
Protest directed at the German government
The police found six people there who belonged to the last generation. Their personal details have been identified and criminal investigations may be initiated.
In the statement, a spokeswoman for the group explained the background to the action: “Burn oil or protect fundamental rights? In 2023, only one of the two is still possible.” The climate protectionists protested against the German federal government: “We are still racing towards the 1.5 degree limit, beyond which the climate tipping points lurk: the Arctic is melting. The Gulf Stream is coming to a standstill. The Amazon rainforest is dying,” the activists criticized.
The glass sculpture “Basic Law 49” on the Spree promenade includes 19 panes of glass, each about three meters high. The 19 fundamental rights articles of the German constitution are engraved in it.
