During a ski tour on the slopes in the Christlum in the Tyrolean Achenkirch, a Ukrainian (16) collided with the former Tyrolean speed specialist Peter Rzehak on Sunday. The Tyrolean suffered several broken bones.
The now 53-year-old Tyrolean has five World Cup podiums to his name – including a second place on the Streif in 1999. Now a quiet ski tour on the slopes has become his downfall.
Accident on the top slope
On Sunday around 11 a.m., Peter Rzehak was on slope no. 2 in the Christlum ski area with his touring skis. The athlete was already in the upper part when the serious collision occurred at the 6-seater “Cabrio Flitzer” chairlift in the area where it crossed another slope. For unknown reasons, a skier (16) from Ukraine crashed into the touring car from above.
“We provided first aid to the injured and then organized the evacuation,” says Sandro Huber of the mountain rescue service Achenkirch, who was on the piste service in the Christlum on the day of the accident. The Tyrolean was flown to the Innsbruck clinic, the Ukrainian was taken by the rescue service to the Agataried clinic in Bavaria.
Need second surgery
As the “Krone” learned from those close to the ex-racer, the 53-year-old suffered several broken bones. He needs surgery today. The police have already received a number of reports of a first witness call to clarify the exact course of the accident.
Collisions are rare
According to the Alpine Police, this collision between a ski tourer on a ski slope and a skier is actually an exception this winter. “In many cases – as in Auffach – there are separate tour routes in the ski areas, and the tour riders usually follow the rules,” explains Christoph Silberberger , the chief of the Alpine police in the district of Kufstein.
