There has been an attempted assassination of the separatist leader in the pro-Russian region of Transnistria in the Republic of Moldova. Local security forces in the Moscow-backed separatist area thwarted the plan.
“The crime has been prepared against a number of officials on behalf of the Ukrainian security service,” the Transnistrian Ministry of State Security said. President Vadim Krasnoselsk is said to have been just one of the targets.
“The suspects have been arrested. They have made confessions.” The attack was allegedly planned with a car prepared with explosives in the center of Tiraspol.
tensions are rising
Tensions and concerns that Russia could cause an escalation in Transnistria, where Russian troops are also stationed, have been raging for weeks in EU accession candidate Moldova. Moldovan President Maia Sandu has accused Russia of planning a coup. The Republic of Moldova, which has a population of about 2.5 million, is governed by a pro-European government. Prime Minister Dorin Recean is aiming for EU membership, but that could take years. The former Soviet Republic borders Western Ukraine.
A high-ranking delegation of EU ministers visited Moldova on Wednesday to show support for the government in Chisinau. The delegation, which also included EU Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP), explained that Moldova “belongs to the European family”.
