New York prosecutors have ordered former US President Donald Trump to testify before a grand jury. This could be an indication that charges may soon be filed against Trump in the course of the investigation into alleged hush money payments to a porn star.
It is said to be a payment of about $130,000 to the porn actress known as “Stormy Daniels” shortly before the 2016 presidential election, the New York Times and Washington Post reported Thursday. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims to have had an affair with Trump years before he became president.
Both newspapers cited sources familiar with the trial led by Manhattan attorney Alvin Bragg. Democrat Bragg took office in January. His predecessor, Cyrus Vance Jr., also a Democrat, launched an investigation into Trump’s finances in 2019, sparking a years-long legal battle over the billionaire’s tax records.
Indicted against former president for the first time?
If charged, it would be the first time a former US president has been charged. Several criminal investigations are underway against Trump, who wants to run again in the American elections in 2024. So far, he has not been charged in any of these cases.
