Jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has commented for the first time on the Oscar for the documentary about him. He thanked the team behind the film and said the award was dedicated to those who oppose dictatorship around the world.
He dedicates his “entire contribution to this film to honest and courageous people around the world who every day find the strength to face the monster of dictatorship and its constant companion, war,” Navalny wrote on Twitter . He is “terribly happy of course”, but tries not to forget “that I didn’t win the Oscar.” 2020 and the arrest after his return to Russia 2021.
The creators of the film include Canadian director Daniel Roher, Navalny’s longtime ally Maria Pewchich and journalist Christo Grosev, who works for the Bellingcat platform. In addition, three Austrian cameramen were also involved: Niki Waltl, Simon Fraissler and Daniel Dajakaj. Navalny thanked them and his wife Julia Navalnaja, who attended the awards ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday. “My husband is only in prison for telling the truth. My husband is only in prison for defending democracy. Alexei, I dream of the day when you will be free and our country will be free too,” said she.
Kremlin: “Certain element of politicization”
The 46-year-old opposition politician heard from his lawyer about the price for the documentary. The Kremlin considers the Oscar to be politically motivated. Although he has not seen the documentary, “he dares to assume that there is, of course, a certain element of politicization of the issue,” said Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe recently called on the Russian government to immediately release Navalny and to implement the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). In recent months, the Kremlin-critical opposition figure has often criticized the war in Ukraine from prison and called on Russian citizens to protest against the government. He recently demanded that Ukraine’s 1991 borders be respected. This also applies to the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014.
