Two members of the Last Generation have smeared paint on the facade of the famous Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Photos and videos showed the two removing fire extinguishers from their backpacks of washable paint. Law enforcement officers stopped the action.
According to the group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation), this only took a few minutes. Two members sprayed orange and washable paint on the facade of the medieval building with fire extinguishers. The Palazzo Vecchio is one of the most important buildings in the Tuscan city of Florence. The palace was built in the 14th century and originally served as the seat of the Florentine city parliament. Today the building houses the Municipal Children’s Museum, the municipal office and the beautiful Five Hundred Hall.
The action was directed against the climate policy of the Italian government, causing the activists to do too little for climate protection and to overlook important decisions. The palace is still the same after the paint attack, but “those who occupy it today have lost the vision of responsibility for their community’s future,” a statement said.
Offended by passersby
Law enforcement officers were immediately on the scene on Friday and stopped the action. While taking them away, some of the last generation were insulted by passers-by. After the color attack, the cleaning work started immediately. As can be seen in the photos, the mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, also took part. “They are barbarians. You don’t protest like that,” he said.
The last generation is also active in Austria and is known in this country for pasting campaigns on the street. Requirements are, for example, 100 km/h on highways and less concrete in cities.
