“Party Garden” affair: – Johnson will be a crucial test for the British Tories

Date:

Accepting ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s role in the ‘Partygate’ affair will be a crucial test for the Conservative Party. A government spokesman on Monday defended the investigation as a matter that parliament should conduct without interference. Johnson’s allies had repeatedly criticized the handling of his actions during the banned Downing Street lockdown parties.

Stephen Greenhalgh, the Tory MP in the House of Lords, told Times Radio he feared the investigation could turn into a “witch hunt”. He called on Conservative MPs on the relevant House of Commons committee to withdraw.

The former prime minister will testify before the committee on Wednesday
Johnson, who resigned last summer after a series of scandals under pressure from his party, is due to testify before the committee on Wednesday. According to the British news agency PA, his written statements have already been received by the panel.

The commission’s report weighs heavily on Johnson
A preliminary commission report on the “Partygate” affair had already accused Johnson. The evidence suggested it must have been “abundantly obvious” to the ex-premier that the illegal lockdown parties on Downing Street were in breach of corona rules, it said. If an MP is found to have lied to the House of Commons, he risks suspension, which in turn could lead to the loss of his mandate.

Johnson had repeatedly denied that any rules had been broken in Downing Street. He was fined for attending a lockdown event.
