After a spectacular arrest in Sellrain in Tyrol, a student (18) who had shared IS propaganda videos on social networks on the internet and in some cases even discussed plans of attack, was now on trial. The young man risked up to ten years in prison. But he got off relatively lightly.
There were dramatic scenes that took place last July when Cobra’s special forces assaulted otherwise idyllic Sellrain. The mother of an IS fanatic of Turkish descent, who allegedly threatened police officers online with their heads cut off, hit two officers with her car and the son in the passenger seat.
One was seriously injured and the other slightly injured. The woman probably wanted to escape from the elite police officers who were heavily armed with guns. The mother and son were overpowered and arrested.
While the investigation against the mother is still ongoing, the 18-year-old now had to appear before a juvenile court of the Innsbruck regional court. The hearing took place behind closed doors.
Attacks on police stations
The student would not only have clearly sympathized with the terrorist organization IS via various social media such as Telegram and TikTok, but would also have distributed propaganda videos expressly calling for the killing of people of other faiths. In addition, the young man, who used a logo with the banned IS flag as a profile picture, would have rolled out plans to attack police stations. There was also talk of buying explosives.
Thirst for admiration and affection on the internet
Although the jury did not believe that the suspect actually wanted to carry out attacks, they were convinced that he acted as a propagandist for IS to gain affection and admiration. “Something like this should not be underestimated,” the president of the court emphasized at the verdict.
The 18-year-old was sentenced to 18 months in prison, 13 of which were conditionally suspended. The young man immediately accepted the verdict, which is not yet final.
