Despite the rain over the weekend, the situation remains tense. Households in Lavanttal (Carinthia) must be supplied with water. Fire bans had to be issued first. But the chance to ignite Easter hopes is still there.
The past few weeks have brought almost no significant precipitation. And the consequences of this shortage are already being felt in Carinthia – as reported. Fire departments have to provide households with precious water, especially in the Lavanttal area.
Dust dry again from Monday
A low expected this weekend, which will bring some rain and even thunderstorms in some regions, will not change that. Groundwater levels are likely to remain low. “And from Monday it will be dust-dry again due to the hair dryer,” experts from Ubimet announce.
Avoid water bottlenecks
Measures are therefore being taken in some places to save water. For example, the municipality of Liebenfels calls on swimming pools to be filled in time. “We have to coordinate this so that there is no water bottleneck,” explains Mayor Klaus Köchl, who has 250 swimming pool owners among his fellow citizens.
The increasing dryness of the forest floor is now also a cause for concern. The area around Villach is already considered a risk area for forest fires, which means that open flames, smoking, smoldering or pyrotechnic objects are prohibited in the vicinity of the forest with immediate effect. Section 41 of the Forestry Act has also been activated in the St. Veit neighborhood, which prohibits lighting fires due to particularly dry conditions.
“It’s more precautionary. It should remind people not to be careless. This ordinance is issued four to five times a year,” explains Heinz Hochsteiner of the district administration.
Sign up Easter fire!
Violations can be punished with fines of up to 7,270 euros or imprisonment for up to four weeks. Easter fires are not banned for the time being, they continue to enjoy an exceptional status as traditional bonfires. However, they must be reported to the municipality no later than four days before they burn down, which will forward this to the fire brigade’s emergency center. Hundreds of Easter fire reports are received there every year.
