Russia is making progress with the announced project of its nuclear supertorpedo “Poseidon”. The construction of the necessary infrastructure on the Pacific coasts for the deployment of nuclear submarines that can be equipped with the torpedo should be completed by early 2024, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.
The infrastructure is to serve the stationing of two special-purpose submarines in Kamchatka, it said. The base of the Russian Pacific Fleet for nuclear ballistic missile submarines is located on the Russian Peninsula in Northeast Asia.
Allegedly completely new type of strategic nuclear weapons
Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin announced the “Poseidon” torpedoes in 2018, saying it would be a completely new type of strategic nuclear weapon with unlimited range. In January 2023, the Tass news agency reported, citing unspecified sources, that the first of these torpedoes had been completed.
There are few confirmed details about her. It is said to be a combination torpedo and drone that can be launched from a nuclear submarine and has its own nuclear power supply.
How the nuclear torpedoes work:
Tass also reported on Monday that Russia is currently forming a new submarine unit in its Pacific fleet. New special-purpose submarines would contribute to Russia’s strategic deterrence, the agency said, citing insiders.
Race for influence in the Western Pacific
The development comes amid growing tensions between the US and China over influence in the Western Pacific. Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Putin in Moscow. Both sides have announced closer ties, including in the military field. Putin said on Sunday that Russia would not form a military alliance with China. In the course of the war in Ukraine, Russia and China have moved closer together.
