Viennese angry – “Don’t pay 15 euros for a painted Easter egg!”

The Easter markets in Vienna are open for another week. The “Krone” made a round around Am Hof ​​on Friday morning. Some Viennese used the sunny hours to go for a walk. Rudolf Schreiber and Karin Bauernfeind were also on the road. “We only looked, but didn’t buy anything,” says Karin Bauernfeind. “Before we were at the Freyung, they charged 15 euros for a painted Easter egg, but I’m not going to pay that,” says Rudolf Schreiber. And further: “For an Easter bouquet you need ten, and then you save 150 euros.”

And he is not alone in this opinion. Verica Gajic is also on the market with her girlfriends. “We’ll have a drink and then leave. It’s too expensive for us here. I don’t even look at the Easter decorations,” said the 43-year-old. She herself only drinks an Aperol, which is not exactly cheap at seven euros. Georg Viehhauser says: “Most of them just watch. The only ones who really grab their wallets are tourists.”

“Handicraft must be worth something”
But are the prices for the crafts justified? “I spend many hours on my hands, you can’t count the working hours,” says Ninny Huszarek. She has been standing with a stall at the Easter market for years and sells her handicrafts there. “Prices have nothing to do with inflation. I didn’t increase it, but handiwork must be worth something,” says the exhibitor. Their eggs are slightly cheaper – artistically painted quail eggs are available from six euros. The most expensive example in her collection is an ostrich egg for no less than 64 euros.

Nevertheless, things are going well for Standlerin Huszarek so far. She has many regular customers, but also tourists, especially Americans, buy. Interesting: young people also like handicrafts.
