Conversations with Moscow? – Kiev promises negotiations on Crimea

Date:

The Ukrainian government is ready to negotiate with Russia for the return of Crimea – if its own troops reach the borders of the annexed peninsula as part of the counter-offensive. This was stated by the deputy head of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Sybiha, in an interview with the “Financial Times”.

“If we manage to achieve our strategic objectives on the battlefield and if we are at the administrative border of Crimea, then we are ready to start diplomatic talks. But that does not mean that we exclude a military liberation of Crimea ‘ said Sybiha.

In this regard, the newspaper pointed out that Sybiha’s words are the “clearest expression of interest” since April last year in negotiations with the Russian Federation.

Ukraine is also demanding the return of all occupied territories
The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly hinted that the Russian offensive war can only be ended after the withdrawal of Russian troops from all occupied territories and the restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty within the internationally recognized 1991 borders, including Crimea and Donbass.

Until recently, Kiev considered only a military solution for the return of Crimea possible. However, the Kremlin does not want to talk about returning the peninsula. In February and March 2022, Ukraine and Russia negotiated a settlement to the conflict. However, when the massacre of civilians in Bucha became public knowledge last April, talks were frozen.
