The war in Ukraine has now become brutal trench warfare in the east of the country – the city of Bakhmut, which has been the subject of heavy fighting for weeks, has become a sad symbol in this regard. Lately, as the war progressed, more and more fighters from the “Wagner mercenaries” were used – also to prevent casualties within the Russian army proper. In the talk on krone.tv, ‘Krone’ journalist Paul Tikal explains what the effects are and whether there are opportunities for negotiations.
“These thousands of mercenaries, often recruited from former Russian prisoners, should each be able to return to Russia six months after entering the respective battle to be integrated into society there,” says Paul Tikal in a detailed interview with Gerhard Koller: And there it could well be that these criminals, who were originally convicted, will commit crimes again in their environment.”
Tikal also extensively reports on the current course of the war and his skepticism that the Russian offensive war can be ended by a negotiated solution: “Putin has set clear goals for his ‘military special operation’. Now he can’t help it. And Zelenskyy has repeatedly announced that Ukraine will recapture all occupied territories – including the Crimea peninsula. So there is practically no room for negotiated solutions.”
