Unknown perpetrators contacted a 79-year-old woman from Graz with “Hello mom, my mobile phone is broken”. Believing that she was helping her own son, she transferred ten thousand euros!
On Maundy Thursday, the mobile phone showed a new text message on the display: “Hello Mom, my mobile phone is broken. Can you contact me via WhatsApp?” A link followed.A woman from Graz (79) complied with her alleged son’s request and started the chat.
Victim recognized fraud late
The woman was also asked for money. She still didn’t know who it was, so by noon the next day she transferred money four times—each to different accounts. In total, the transactions amounted to tens of thousands of euros!
It wasn’t until the 79-year-old informed her real son that she realized she had fallen victim to the recently publicized daughter-son scam and filed a complaint. The investigation has been ongoing ever since.
