Garikoitz Nazabalchairman of EHNE Gipuzkoa, explained to eitb.eus that “livestock farmers feel that the institutions only remember them on May 1 and Artzain Eguna”.

The farmers of Aralar and the agricultural and livestock associations ENBA and EHNE have announced that they will not be present this Sunday at the official act of opening of the Aralar pasturesclaiming it is a “theatre” and because mountain cattle “besides a holiday, it must be protected all year round”.

Nazabal has stated that territorial management is necessary all year round. In this sense, he has strongly criticized the administration of the Commonwealth of Enirio-Aralar and the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa

In this regard, the representative of EHNE has assured that farmers and herders are trapped in the middle of the “rifirrafes” between settings. For example, the necessary investments are often half-delayed or simply not implemented, he added. In that sense, he has said that both institutions “pass the ball to each other”.

When asked about the condition of the tracks in Aralar, Nazabal pointed out that they only built “a few pieces, and not very good ones” In addition, he has denounced the condition and the “poor” maintenance of the tracks in use.

The union representative recalls the controversy the construction of these tracks provoked, as environmental associations positioned themselves against the infrastructure. “It looked like a highway was going to be built, while the tracks are three meters wide,” he noted.

In the words of Nazabal, “Ecopopulist discourses present peasants as mere exploiters of nature, when they are not, quite the contrary.” In this sense, he has accused the institutions of being subject to these ecopulist discourses.

The president of EHNE Gipuzkoa has made it clear that professionals in the sector “burnt” with the situation. For this reason they gathered in a meeting and decided to stand up.

On the other hand, he is concerned with the future of the sector, as with this “grueling” circumstances It is difficult for young people to take up the baton, but also for most veterans to continue in the trade.
