A school teacher in Sardinia has been suspended for 20 days for praying with children in class. Her salary was also reduced. In Italy, religious practices are not allowed in public schools.
The case already occurred on the last day of school before Christmas during a changeover hour in the town of San Vero Milis (Sardinia). Maria Francescangeli (58) made a bracelet with the children that was structured like a rosary. Then she prayed with them a rosary, an Ave Maria and an Our Father. After class, the parents of two children complained, to which the teacher apologized.
However, the 58-year-old did not escape a disciplinary punishment. In mid-March, she was suspended for 20 days. When she stayed away from class between March 27 and April 15, the matter became public. First local, then national media reported. Religious activities in state schools are not allowed in the neighboring country.

However, the teacher does not want to take the punishment and says she has already objected. The leader of the right-wing populist Lega party, Matteo Salvini, called the school board’s decision “insane”.
