“A nightmare” – US military secrets resurfaced on the Internet

Date:

According to media reports, new documents containing US military secrets have surfaced online. They contain, among other things, information about the air defense capabilities of the Ukrainian army and about the military situation in the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East. The Pentagon is currently investigating the matter.

According to the New York Times, there are a total of more than 100 secret documents that were published on Friday (local time), including on Twitter. They appeared to come from the US military and intelligence agencies, the Wall Street Journal wrote. For example, the documents would contain sensitive information about US/NATO plans for the war in Ukraine. There would be 50 British and 14 American forces at war in the country.

The plans are about how to strengthen the Ukrainian army ahead of a planned offensive against the Russian occupiers. According to media reports, the documents could point to a disinformation campaign. For example, estimates of Ukrainian losses are exaggerated, while figures for Russian losses are very low. Russian military experts could still glean information from the documents, such as arms shipment schedules or Ukrainian troop strength.

Kiev and Moscow assume fake
However, the Russian side is currently assuming a misleading maneuver or not thinking that all documents are correct. The situation at the front says otherwise and the number of Ukrainian armed forces is large enough, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. The Ukrainian side also said that the secret documents do not reflect the actual plans. “Since the collapse of the USSR, the secret services have deteriorated to the point that they can only redeem themselves with Photoshop and virtual fakes,” presidential aide Mykhailo Podoliak tweeted. At the same time, he does not assume completely false information.

“Nightmare also for Britain”
The revelations are a “nightmare” for the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, according to a US intelligence official. However, concrete plans for attacks or major offensives would not have leaked. It is still unclear whether the documents are genuine. The Pentagon is investigating the matter, a spokeswoman for the US Defense Department said.

A similar publication of secret documents about Ukrainian preparations for a counter-offensive had already become known on Thursday. Other content includes classified information related to China, the Middle East and terrorism.
