Four days – lousy wages: 50,000 British doctors on strike

Date:

In the UK, nearly 50,000 hospital residents went on temporary strike. The doctors are demanding a 35 percent pay rise. The work stoppage is supposed to last four days – and brings huge problems.

At the start of the strike on Tuesday, those responsible for Britain’s NHS national health system assumed that around 350,000 doctor’s appointments, including many surgeries, would fall victim to the strike – a huge burden on the health system.

Salary increase of more than 22,000 euros?
The doctors justify their work stoppage with the fact that their “salary has fallen by 26 percent in real terms over the past 15 years”. This is due to wage increases that have always been lower than inflation. British Health Secretary Steve Barclay called the demands “unreasonable”. This would mean a salary increase of 20,000 pounds (currently 22,858.45 euros) per year for some doctors. In Britain, the NHS is state-run and tax-funded.

Britain on strike
The doctors’ strike is the latest episode in a months-long struggle by staff for more pay. For example, the nursing staff went on strike for three days in March.
