Romania wants to buy the F35 “Lightning II” stealth bomber. An aircraft would cost the NATO member about 200 million euros. The purchase of the jets could be the start of a wave of rearmament in the country.
Against the background of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, Romania has decided to purchase F35 fighter jets for its own air force. It is important to “ensure air superiority under all circumstances,” the president’s office said in a broadcast on Tuesday after the Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) meeting.
The F35 “Lightning II” stealth bombers from the American defense company Lockheed Martin are considered the most modern fighter jets in the world. It is not known how many jet aircraft of this type the NATO country Romania ultimately wants to buy. Due to the system, the unit price can only be given as a rough estimate and should be around EUR 200 million.
Purchase takes years
However, just a few weeks ago, the head of the Defense Ministry’s Directorate General for Weapons Systems, Major General Teodor Incicas, stressed that Romania should have at least one F35 squadron by 2030.
The purchase process will probably take several years. The authorities in Bucharest must first sign a letter of intent and then the actual purchase contract.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense recently announced that it has sent a number of documents to parliament for approval. It concerns the purchase of a battalion of Abrams main battle tanks, K9 howitzers, anti-aircraft systems and drones, missiles to equip the F16 fighter jets and submarines from France.
