Suspicious mail for the Finnish embassy in Moscow: The consulate contained a letter with powder. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was immediately contacted, the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported on Friday.

Relations between the two countries have deteriorated significantly since Finland joined NATO on April 4. Now the 31st member of the US-led military alliance, it shares a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö described his country’s entry into NATO as the beginning of a new era. The Finnish head of state declared that his country’s period of military freedom from alliances had now come to an end.
