Hundreds of people demonstrated Saturday for the right to abortion in front of the Supreme Court in Washington. The demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Judges are not doctors”. They were responding to a Texas federal judge’s decision to withdraw approval of the abortion pill mifepristone.
The Texas judge’s decision has plunged the US into a new legal battle over abortion rights. A federal appeals court in Louisiana overturned Texas’ decision Wednesday while tightening the conditions under which mifepristone can be prescribed.
The U.S. government then filed an urgent motion with the Supreme Court to reverse the effect of restrictive rulings. On Friday, the Supreme Court decided to initially retain access to the abortion pill until Wednesday. By then, the disputing parties must submit their oral arguments.
Abortion: a controversial socio-political issue
On the US Supreme Court, the conservative camp has a clear majority of six out of nine justices after several replacements during the tenure of former US President Donald Trump. Abortion rights are one of the most controversial socio-political issues in the United States. Last June, the Supreme Court struck down the country’s fundamental right to abortion — a ruling that sparked a political earthquake.
Also in use in Austria
Mifepristone, known in Austria and Germany by the trade name Mifegyne, is used in more than every second abortion in the US. According to the FDA, more than 5.6 million women have used the pill since it was approved in 2000. In less than 1,500 cases there were complications without an association with mifepristone being established.
