New verdicts – imprisonment instead of death penalty for protesters in Iran

Date:

In Iran, the judiciary has sentenced several protesters who were threatened with the death penalty to prison terms. The trial of a militia supporter’s death has been retried by the Supreme Court. Eleven defendants have now been sentenced to several years in prison and three men have been acquitted.

For example, in the case of doctor Hamid Ghare Hassanlu, an earlier death sentence was commuted to 15 years in prison. His wife, who is also accused, has been sentenced to five years in prison. The men Resa Aria and Hussein Mohammadi, who were threatened with the death penalty, also received prison sentences. A total of 14 suspects were sent again.

Mock trials for deterrence?
Two protesters were executed earlier this year as part of the trial surrounding the death of a militia supporter near the capital Tehran. The move sparked outrage both in Iran and around the world. Human rights experts spoke of mock trials. Critics believe this is intended to intimidate the protest movement. Since the execution of the death sentences, street protests have decreased dramatically. For example, there are now protests by girls and women who disregard the obligation to wear a headscarf.

So far, more than two dozen demonstrators in Iran have reportedly been threatened with the death penalty and four sentences have been carried out. Not only is the course of the Iranian judiciary very strong, the actions of the security apparatus are also violent. The fall 2022 protests were sparked by the death of Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being arrested for violating Islamic dress codes.
