In a cyber defense exercise, numerous NATO countries and other partner states in Estonia practice the emergency situation for an attack from the network.
During the virtual maneuver, teams from 38 countries must protect real computer systems against real-time attacks for four days and practice tactical and strategic decisions in critical situations, as the NATO Competence Center for Defense against Internet Attacks in Tallinn has announced. There was talk of more than 3,000 participants.
“Cyber warfare may not be as visible as kinetic warfare, but it is integrated into belligerent activities,” Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said, referring to Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine. The past year has shown how important a strong cyber defense is.
The exercise has been held annually since 2010. Since 2008, Estonia has been home to the NATO Center, a kind of military think tank outside the chain of command of the Western military alliance. It was established in 2007 after a widespread cyber-attack on the Baltic EU and NATO state bordering Russia.
