Soldiers wanted – Kremlin video for Russians: “Be real men!”

Date:

The Russian Ministry of Defense is currently making a name for itself with an elaborately produced promotional video in the style of an action movie for the war. It is intended to convince the compatriots to volunteer for the mission. In view of the heavy losses at the front, does Moscow no longer know how to help itself in another way?

In the clip, we see a supermarket security guard, a gym trainer and a taxi driver who transform into soldiers in uniform. The video immediately raises the question of whether the men are serving their country in the right place. “You are a man! Become one now!” can be read in Russian in the 46 second clip “Serve with a contract!” is the command.

Contrast between East and West
To this day, Russia still represents very distinct role models and repeatedly invokes “traditional values” that the Kremlin says no longer exist in the “depraved West”. The concept of men that emerged in the promotional video could not do better justice to the image that was formed under the incumbent Russian president Vladimir Putin: strong, imposing, sporty.

The metal music playing in the background also accompanies the photo. It is in stark contrast to campaigns by other armed forces, such as the US military. In comparison, the promotional videos for volunteers from the United States immediately come across as ‘soft’, romantic and familiar (see below). The army is presented as friend and helper, while the basic mood in the Russian clip is one of harshness and hostility.

unrealistic promises
Russia promises the volunteers a monthly salary of 204,000 rubles (about 2,280 euros) for the frontline service, a good education and social benefits. The men can report directly to a hotline with the number 117 or on a website. There are registration points for volunteers throughout the country. The pledges are at odds with many other films in which military personnel consistently complain about poor equipment, leadership and treatment.

Most recently, the Russian Private Army had written to Wagner to recruit volunteers for deployment in the war zone for a monthly salary of 240,000 rubles (about $2,700). Success bonuses are also promised, Wagner said. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has also set up recruitment agencies across the country.
