99 students in desperate need – but no punishment for German teachers

Date:

The case of the 99-strong group of school students from Germany, who got into trouble in Vorarlberg in the mountains in June 2022, must now also be finalized legally. The children, some of whom had panicked, had to be rescued from the mountain by helicopter after a teacher selected a much too difficult mountain hike.

Now it’s solved. The teacher who chased 99 children up a mountain in the country in June 2022, leading to a complicated rescue operation, will not be prosecuted. The prosecutor’s office in Feldkirch said Friday that an agreement has been reached on a diversion. Originally, the prosecutor’s office was charged with negligent endangerment of society.

As reported, the 99 children and their teachers ran into trouble in June 2022 when the group ascended the Heuberggrad. A route that the teacher had chosen on the internet the night before, although this requires “fear of heights and alpine experience”.

Large-scale helicopter operation
At the time there was a great lack of understanding why such a challenging route was chosen for children who had no mountain experience at all. Because more and more children got into trouble, the emergency services were alerted. The helicopter rescue – a total of 33 flights – turned out to be extremely complex.
