The number of people going hungry worldwide has almost doubled since the start of the corona pandemic. There is criticism of the Austrian support.
More than a quarter of a billion people in the world are starving! And sometimes on a dramatic scale, UN organizations warn in their current report.
Alarming numbers
The alarming figures were announced on Wednesday by the European Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Food Program of the United Nations (WFP). The three organizations founded the Global Food Crisis Network (GNAFC) in 2016.
Wars and crises as main reasons
Wars, economic and climate crises are the main reasons why 258 million people are affected by acute hunger. That is almost twice as much as before the corona pandemic.
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, described this as “inexcusable” in the report’s foreword.
Aid organization lacks a clear strategy
The Austrian federal government responded and wants to strengthen cooperation with NGOs in crisis regions and has made 21.5 million euros available from the Foreign Disaster Fund for this purpose. The SOS Children’s Village criticizes that this is a first step, but there is no clear strategy on what to do with the money. The aid organization World Vision also lacks a clear strategy for humanitarian aid. “Efficient aid is only possible with such a strategy. We cannot keep people who have lost everything waiting.”
