The wolves photographed on a Gailtaler Alm are the large pack of hybrid wolves from Tarvisio, near the border in Italy.
Even great carnivore expert Paolo Molinari was stunned when he saw the photo of the wolves in the “Krone”, which an 81-year-old hunter photographed on Monday on the Görtschacher Alm: “These are our hybrids. Now I understand why we haven’t had any new photos for days of the animals have received from our game cameras.”
Because Molinari has been ordered by the Italian government to catch, castrate or sterilize the hybrid wolves – which are crosses between dogs and wolves – and then release them again. Molinari: “It is the first time that the animals have emigrated to Carinthia, but they are already back in Italy. A dead doe has been found in the Bartolo valley near the border.”
Incidentally, the black, 45-kilogram male alpha-hybrid wolf (see photo), who emigrated from Slovenia and has been living in the border triangle since 2021, is likely to be particularly cunning. The animal fathered 14 offspring here in 2021 and 2022 with a she-wolf. Up to seven young wolves can be added to this year’s litter.
Molinari: “Five of these hybrid wolves have already been killed in Slovenia and two more have been found dead.”
