Joe Biden is too old for many, according to an American poll. Donald Trump, on the other hand – although not much younger – is perceived as more vital. The polls of the American president are falling sharply in other respects as well.
Shortly after officially announcing his re-election ambitions, US President Joe Biden faced scathing polls. According to a recent poll commissioned by the Washington Post and broadcaster ABC, released Sunday, the majority of Americans do not consider Biden mentally or physically fit enough to effectively serve as president. Critics of the US president have repeatedly accused him of being “unfit for office”.
63 percent of those surveyed stated that the 80-year-old did not have the intellectual acuity. 62 percent believed that Biden was not in sufficient physical condition for that.
Trump is doing better
Citizens were much more positive about ex-president Donald Trump, who also wants to participate in the elections next year. Most of them confirmed that the 76-year-old had the necessary mental and physical fitness for the White House post. 54 percent rated Trump mentally fit enough, 64 percent rated him physically fit enough for the highest office in the state.
Elsewhere in the survey, Biden was slightly ahead of his competitor: on the issue of honesty and trustworthiness. However, neither of them managed to convince a majority here. 41 percent rated Biden as honest and trustworthy, compared to 33 percent for Trump. Despite the lead, this should give Biden food for thought.
Bad polls for Biden
In general, the incumbent party has problems getting the population excited for a second term in office (see graph).
Even among pro-Democrats, only 36 percent said they would like Biden to be the Democratic presidential nominee. 58 percent wished “someone else”.
Biden would be 86 at the end of his second term
Biden entered the White House in 2021 as the oldest president of all time. He will be 81 in the election in a year and a half and will be 86 at the end of a possible second term. Biden’s age and fitness to run for president again have long been the subject of debate, including within his own party.
The Democrat is constantly trying to address such concerns. In an interview with MSNBC on Friday, Biden said of his age, “I’ve gained an awful lot of wisdom. I know more than the vast majority of people.” He has “more experience than anyone who has ever run for office”.
