A tornado’s funnel-shaped vortex, visible from afar, moved across entire regions, getting closer and closer to the ground. The menacing sky event slammed to the ground in full force on Saturday in Ziersdorf like a tornado. The fire brigade was in their headquarters – they were preparing everything for a big party.
It was a hype, not only on social media: residents of the southwestern Weinviertel watched with concern as a tornado was visible from far high in the sky. In Ziersdorf in the Hollabrunn district there was then contact with the earth – there the (un)weather phenomenon showed its full force: in a stretch of a few hundred meters, the tornado, as reported, damaged three residential buildings on the edge, bent telephone poles and a canopy flung through the air.
Firefighters rushed to the emergency vehicles
And that just as the Florianis of the market town were preparing for a big party in the fire station. “We left the tables, benches and plates and jumped into the emergency vehicles,” says FF spokesman Andreas Kisser. Already visually warned, the help of the Ravelsbach and Groß Weikersdorf fire brigade was quickly on the scene. “Many thanks to our colleagues – despite the enormous amount of work, we were able to complete all the preparatory work for our big party.”
The extent of the damage
During a tour, Mayor Hermann Fischer did not notice the full extent of the damage until the next day: “The wood hut of the biomass landfill has come loose – its parts are scattered on the adjacent property.”
On a side note, a wrecker was also inaugurated at the FF festival on Sunday, which converted the Florianis to suitability for use in 500 hours of volunteer work, the mayor explains: “We had this asset after a terrible storm almost exactly two years ago with more than 100 million euros in damages. And just one day before the commissioning, another dangerous extreme weather event happened.”
