International survey – Fewer migrants most important for Austrians

Date:

According to an international survey, people in Europe place significantly more importance on reducing immigration than in the rest of the world. And Austria is at the very top.

While only 12 percent of global respondents placed migratory reduction among the top three issues their governments should focus more on, in Europe the figure was 19 percent. The highest values of all 53 countries analyzed were in Austria (34 percent), Germany (31), the Netherlands (30), France (28) and Sweden (27). The first non-EU country is Chile with 26 percent.

This is the conclusion of a study, the results of which were published in Copenhagen on Wednesday by the democracy organization of former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Alliance of Democracies.

Health care and poverty reduction are top themes
From a global perspective, it is especially important to those surveyed that their governments focus more on reducing poverty, fighting corruption, promoting economic growth, improving healthcare and education. Health care and poverty reduction are paramount in Europe.

People surveyed in 53 countries
Fogh’s organization will host the Democracy Summit in Copenhagen next Monday and Tuesday, which will focus on conflict and the state of democracy in the world. In the run-up to the international conference, the Alliance of Democracies is publishing what it claims is the world’s largest survey of the perception of democracy, the “Democracy Perception Index”. The market research institute Latana surveyed a total of nearly 54,000 people in 53 countries, where three quarters of the world’s population live.
