Has the Ukrainian counter-offensive begun? Russian journalists report almost in panic about an imminent encirclement by Putin’s troops near Bakhmut. Elsewhere Ukrainian tanks apparently also roll towards Russian positions.
According to the war correspondent of Russian state television, alarm bells are ringing among Russian troops fighting in Bakhmut. Given the successes of the Ukrainian attack on the flanks of the Wagner mercenaries fighting in the city, there is a risk of a comprehensive encirclement, Yevgeny Poddubny wrote on Telegram on Thursday.
Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin had previously warned several times about a menacing boiler due to unsecured flanks. Poddubny also reported Ukrainian breakthroughs in fighting around Soledar, which is just a few miles northeast of Bakhmut.
“location is difficult”
There, Ukrainian battle groups managed to break through the Russian lines. “The situation is difficult,” Poddubny wrote. It was not until late January that Russian troops took Soledar after weeks of heavy fighting.
Russia also expects an attack in the Zaporizhia region within the next 24 hours, “with the aim of breaking through the first line of defense,” reports Belarusian medium “Nexta”, based in Warsaw. However, in a BBC interview published Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Ukraine still needs time for the planned counter-offensive.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense places circles
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Twitter account responded with a compass in a clear allusion to the impending encirclement of Russian troops at Bakhmut.
“Conscripts refresh their math skills, especially when measuring a radius (e.g. 300 km). They learn quickly,” the ministry writes.
The information on the Ukrainian claims could not be independently verified. The Ukrainian military leadership has not provided any further information about this, only speaking of heavy fighting near Bakhmut and the Ministry of Defense posted the said circle.
