Serious accident at the playground in Waizenkirchen in Upper Austria. The wooden beam of a zip line broke when a 14-year-old used it. It is now being investigated whether the municipality could have prevented the accident.
The 14-year-old secondary school student in Waizenkirchen played with the rope slide on the playground there during lunch break on Thursday – together with some classmates. He sat on the board swing and his friends pushed him. After the student hit the stop at the end of the cable and swung back again, the wooden beam suddenly broke apart in the middle.

As a result, the boy fell to the ground along with the disc swing and injured himself to an undetermined degree. During the initial investigations, it became known that the last inspection in October 2022 had already established that there was a serious defect in the wooden beam of the zip line in question due to a fungal attack. This should have been remedied by the municipality in the spring of 2023.
Repair was already planned
Mayor Fabian Grüneis: “We had already planned to replace the wood in the coming days. Unfortunately, this accident has now happened.” Of course, the playground equipment is now closed, but the rest of the playground is still available for the children. The mayor has already spoken to the child’s parents. “He is fine again.”
