The initially planned strike by lifeguards (see video above) has been canceled on the holiday island of Mallorca. The company had complied with the demanded wage increase, the company said. The employees did all their duty on the beach on Sunday.
But it had no bath temperatures that day. The lifeguards in Palma are usually on duty from 11am to 7pm daily during the season. Last year they had already announced that they would stop working. An agreement was then reached with political representatives, but the commitments have not been implemented to this day.
The official beach season started again this year in May, instead of April as agreed. There is still no beach access all year round for people with disabilities. “Only from June to September can they (people with disabilities) enter the water without any problems, while this should actually be possible throughout the bathing season,” says a spokesperson for the approximately 50 employees, Francisco Calvo. Last year they also called for renovation of the disabled toilets and new high chairs.
New operator from August
Palma City Hall said the lack of improvements was related to the old contract from the previous concessionaire. From August, a new operator will take over under better conditions.
