1.8 million in the polls – Elections in Turkey: Voting abroad ended

Abroad, the Turkish presidential elections ended at 10 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Worldwide, 1,839,488 Turks abroad voted. A new participation record was set in Austria.

The day before, participation in the first round of elections (62,349 votes) was exceeded by 63,626 votes, according to figures distributed by the Turkish embassy in Austria. Voter turnout was also higher.

Incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu face off in the second round of the election. The results will be announced after the vote in Turkey on May 28. About 108,000 Turkish citizens were eligible to vote in Austria. You can vote since Saturday. As with the first round of voting, voting was not only possible in the three consulates-general in Vienna, Salzburg and Bregenz, but also in specially equipped polling stations in Linz, Graz and Innsbruck.

Voters from Austria mostly for Erdogan
Erdogan is the favorite in the vote. In the first round on May 14, he was about 4.5 percentage points ahead of the CHP’s Kilicdaroglu, but missed the required absolute majority. Turks abroad voted 57.70 percent for the incumbent party on the first ballot. Kilicdaroglu received almost 40 percent of the vote. According to preliminary figures, nearly 72 percent of voters in Austria voted for Erdogan. The incumbent did particularly well in an international comparison.

On Wednesday, Erdogan was pleased with the result abroad in the first round and participation so far in the second. He continued to call on his supporters to go to the polls. Turkey votes on May 28. Only then will the results from abroad be published.
