Storms are raging – Italy continues to struggle with massive amounts of water

Date:

After heavy flooding in the northern Italian Adriatic region of Emilia Romagna last week, new storms broke out on Thursday night. Severe thunderstorms particularly affected the Lombard province of Brescia.

In Rezzato, a river dam collapsed and cars ended up in a canal without injuries. In Brescia there were traffic delays due to flooded underpasses. Trees fell on parked cars.

Damage in the billions
The situation is also not harmless in Emilia Romagna. The 20,000 evacuated people who have not yet been able to return home, especially in the provinces of Ravenna and Forlì, have to wait to return home. The damage in the region is provisionally estimated at more than 7 billion euros.

The government in Rome is trying to get concrete help: further aid measures will be taken at a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday afternoon. An initial aid package worth more than two billion euros for the affected population was already approved on Tuesday by the government of Giorgia Meloni.

Day of mourning and first visit
On Wednesday, a day of mourning was declared throughout Italy in honor of the 15 storm deaths in Emilia-Romagna. On Thursday, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will visit the worst flooded areas. Meloni is received by der Leyen in Bologna and will accompany her on a helicopter ride. Italy hopes to receive €400 million from the EU Solidarity Fund for reconstruction.
