After the searches at the Last Generation in Germany, there were protests in Graz on Friday afternoon: young activists blocked traffic at the Kunsthaus, the police had their hands full. There were also protests in Vienna and Innsbruck.
The contrast could hardly have been greater. On the packed Lendplatz in Graz, many people enjoyed the warm sun on Friday afternoon or warmed up for perhaps the decisive GAK match in the evening. At the same time, last generation climate activists and supporters with serious faces and warning messages on posters walked through the market stalls.
After weeks of no action in Graz, solidarity was shown after the raids on the last generation in Germany. The protest was not registered, but police were still numerous at the scene, even in civilian cars.
Traffic jam at Lendkai in Graz
The group of about 80 people moved quietly first to Mariahilferplatz and then to Lendkai. The result was a traffic jam – and then ten young activists got stuck at the Kunsthaus. Police were able to get some off the streets quickly, while others took longer.
There was applause and cheering from bystanders (“You’re not alone”), some passersby shaking their heads and making vitriolic remarks. A sultry afternoon in Graz shows: the climate glue debate will also stay with us in the summer.
