Wagner’s private Russian army has begun withdrawing troops from some of its positions in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, British intelligence experts say. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin had announced that the city would be fully controlled by the regular Russian forces on June 1.
The Ukrainian side had confirmed an exchange of troops by the enemy around Bakhmut. The British Ministry of Defense said troops from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic probably entered the city on Wednesday to begin clearing operations.
Parts of the Russian airborne troops’ 31st brigade may have withdrawn from the Swatove-Kreminna line to reinforce Bakhmut’s flanks, sources said. There, Ukrainian troops had occupied about 20 square kilometers by mid-May. The exchange of Wagner troops will likely continue in controlled phases to prevent the areas around Bakhmut from collapsing, the Secret Service report continues.
According to British experts, the Wagner troops are likely to be deployed for further offensive operations in the Donbass in the future, despite their chief’s criticism of the Russian defense ministry.
